Can & Be able to


"Can" no existe en el presente perfecto así que hay que recurrir a "be able to"."Have you could" suena horrible.

¿Ya has podido hablar con ella?
Have you been able to speak to her yet?
No he podido estudiar mucho últimamente. I haven't been able to study much lately.

Él no ha podido terminar su discurso todavía. He hasn't been able to finish his speech yet.

He podido hacer mucho trabajo esta mañana. I've been able to do a lot of work this morning.

¿Han podido solucionar el problema ya? Have they been able to solve the problem yet?


Para expresar el futuro de "can" también necesitamos usar "be able to". Apesar de esto, miles de españoles dicen a diario "Will you can.?" provocando naúseas de estómago a sus interlocutores angloparlantes. No existe y punto, así que olvídalo.


Podré ayudar a los preparativos de la fiesta si quieres. I'll be able to help get things ready for the party if you like.
Me temo que no podré ir a la reunión. I'm afraid I won't be able to go to the meeting.
¿Podrás venir? Will you be able to come?
¿Sabes si ella podrá explicármelo? Do you know if she'll be able to explain it to me?
Él no durará mucho. No podrá aguantar la presión. He won't last long. He won't be able to stand the pressure.
